What math skills does an entering kindergartener need to be ready for kindergarten?

There are different math skills that an entering kindergarten student needs in order to be prepared for school.

Here are 5 math skills needed for kindergarten readiness:

1.      Count from 1-20

Practice counting 1-10. Then to 20. Then to 30. Some schools say kindergarten readiness is to count from 1-20, I always teach my children to be able to count up to 30.

2.      Know Basic Shapes

Identify basic geometric shapes (triangle, circle, square, rectangle, oval, star, rhombus (diamond) and heart)

3.      Know Numbers (1-10) in Random Order

Use foam numbers and pick up a number and have your child say it.
Say a number and have your child pick it up.

4.      Count Objects (one by one)

Use finger to accurately touch count items to ten.

Count rocks on a nature walk.

5.      Sort and Classify

Although sorting does not seem like a math skill, it is. Your child should be able to sort objects by:

  • Color
  • Shape
  • Size
